
Tagus Valley
Although it would be nice to see every region of Portugal when you visit, most people simply don't have time to do so and are forced to choose between a few areas that are close together. Well if you are going to be visiting Lisbon, which is a must, then you will be right in the heart of the Tagus Valley, so you might as well take the time to enjoy it. The Tagus Valley is on the Southwestern tip of Portugal and features more than enough activity to keep you busy for several months should you have the time. If you don't have much more than a week, then consider visiting a few of the following areas during you time here.
There are two glorious coastlines in which you can escape from the hustle and bustle of the city for some rest and relaxation. Most of the coastline is relatively untouched by commercialism, although will certainly find luxury hotels and resorts in the area. Still, the beaches of Tagus Valley are some of the finest in Europe and you'll find more than enough sun and sand to keep you happy.
There are also plenty of parks and scenic areas that are sure to inspire any traveler. The lush gardens and trees make great subjects for picture taking or long walks with your family. The Westernmost port in Europe is marked by the Cabo da Roca lighthouse, which is a great place to visit. For any race junkies in the family, there is a formula one race track in the area as well, which is very popular on the F1 tour.

One of the most beloved parts of the Tagus valley is the many walled cities, villages, and hilltop castles. In fact, there is even an ancient medieval town, called Obidos, which is just 60 minutes or so North of Lisbon. If you are going to visit Lisbon, then you should definitely take the extra hour to drive to Obidos and experience a true taste of history.
There is also a mix of ancient cathedrals and abbeys, including one that is dated back to the 12th century and is located in the town of Alcobapa. Batalha also houses an ancient monastery that dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and is just as popular. If you are interested in historic buildings such as these, then you will find more than a handful in Tagus Valley to occupy your time.
As you can see, there are a lot of reasons that Tagus Valley is one of the most popular places to visit in Portugal. There is enough of every type of activity to satisfy everyone in the family. You can spend time at the beach, then visit the gardens, and finish up with a fine meal at a local establishment. If you prefer sightseeing you can visit the historic abbeys and churches and visit a medieval town that is unique to the world.
